I live in T or C (Spaceport America NM) and I observe that the large population of elderly/retired are there because they could AFFORD to live somewhere safely. What do you think is going to happen to these many people when land, home, mom/pop business (that are patient with their slow, cane-wielding & check-writing elderly customer base) - all become unaffordable because of this "economic boom" called spaceport. I would love to write ethnography reports "as it happens" and follow a group of the old-timers... what will happen 2-3 years from now and where will they go? Just like these people, everything exploitable is for sale, but there are real people in front of the bulldozers who can't move out of the way very fast. It reminds me a bit of the Mora County resistance but now is great time to record the deconstruction (er... reconstruction) of a small quaint little town with a few stoplights and many crosswalks. -- Curious Anthropologist

If he were telling the truth, that emailed airline itinerary would have come out on the first day of Wienergate. Just ask Bill Clinton: it is one thing for a Wiener to be caught in the wrong place and yet another to repeatedly lie to your constituents about it.

More telling is that he immediately threw the photographer under the bus and even went so far as to insinuate his political opponent to be behind this mess. How stupid does he think his constituents are?

I wonder if he can flop sweat his way through the special session tomorrow without someone publicly asking him to back his story up with his airline receipt showing the "brief nighttime layover."

Great list! I second Execution and When Growth Stalls. You forgot The Blue Ocean Strategy! Maybe not as it applies to PR, but definitely for business.

I recommend Blink by Malcom Gladwell as well, because so much of PR relies on intuition. The Thank You Economy is also a great book. It focuses on how customer service is THE PR tactic in this age, and talks about how it should be integrated into social media.

If you haven't read Rework you should. The War of Art is also a great read for anyone in a creative industry. It's similar to Execution in the sense that it's all about fighting resistance to get things done.

I also think there's a lot one can learn about PR from chick-lit novels, like, Everyone Worth Knowing and Spin. But, mostly those are case studies of what NOT to do. But entertaining nonetheless. At least if you're a woman in her twenties with an affinity for outrageously priced shoes.

Tom, agree.

Also, I just provided info to WXYZ-TV, Detroit, about an underlying subject: Where jobs go?

The anchor was appreciative to know that Apple continues to make huge investments in the United States. Some investments are understandably "quiet" for business reasons, e.g., the huge, new data center in N. Carolina. The Mothership / Campus 2 space-age, Pentagon-sized project in Cupertino, Calif., however, is a historic investment in the American technology sector. Tens of thousands of jobs are involved, yes, but the innovation that will be required both during and after construction will spin out entire new U.S. businesses.

[ People can follow Apple Campus 2 here: http://www.cupertino.org/index.aspx?page=1107 ]

Finally, the news station was amazed to hear how hard Apple recruits his own state's students, especially at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor - successfully, too. Apple just hired my U-M son. That is a proud disclosure, but he's not the only one getting recruited.

That Apple continues to hire Michigan talent was pleasant news to him, and he tweeted so. That Silicon Valley (including Apple, Google, Facebook, Twitter) is actively hiring more U.S. talent is great news. It's also creating a wave of new U.S. entrepreneurs nationwide - from California to Colorado to Massachusetts. Check out the tech job boards.

And this new talent will need PR pros, too...and marketing, accounting, planning...

Thanks Amanda, I agree with your assessment. Reminds me of how people talk about Terry Bradshaw as a football players, when most only know him as a broadcaster. Having the opportunity to see Terry and your Steelers do a number on my Houston Oilers for several years, I can say that his "QB Legend" status is well deserved!

Great thoughts Tom. I think we spend so much time focusing on trying to stay on top of these social media trends, we forget the basics.
